Madonna on Shep Pettibone Fourth of July Party Playlist

Fourth of July Party Playlist:
Let Madonna Producer Shep Pettibone DJ Your BBQ
If it seems like dance icon Shep Pettibone remixed just about every major pop star in the late ‘80s and early ‘90s, it’s because he did.
“I was so privileged to work on so many great songs! I forgot I did so much!” Pettibone recalls. “I did like four songs a week for years. I don’t know how I did it, but I just kept working.” The producer/remixer created official remixes of songs for the likes of Madonna, Janet Jackson, Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, Duran Duran, Pet Shop Boys, Elton John, Prince, New Order, and so many others. He also co-wrote and co-produced Madonna’s No. 1 Billboard Hot 100 singles “Vogue” and “This Used to Be My Playground.”
One huge star who escaped him, however, was Michael Jackson. “Scheduling conflicts” prevented Pettibone from remixing the King of Pop -- he was supposed to rework Jackson’s “Remember the Time.” Pettibone is good-humored about the missed opportunity: He says “Remember” “already was perfect.”
When we spoke to Pettibone earlier this year -- to reflect on the 25th anniversary of “Vogue” reaching No. 1 -- we also asked him to tell us what he considers his most “essential” remix productions. He offered up the unranked (but alphabetized) list, below. However, he cautioned that it wasn’t exhaustive and “could go on and on and on and on.”
Why not let a legendary producer DJ your Fourth of July BBQ this weekend? See below for Shep Pettibone's 22 essential remixes.
(Pettibone, like many remixers, would often create multiple official remixes of any particular song. For the list below, we've selected representative remixes.)
